Yes, the 30 DoP has made its triumphant return! Ok, to be fair my computer has been effectively dead for the last week and a half or so leaving me with no way of up loading and editing photos but, for now god willing, it’s running. Which means more mini fun!
So today I managed to paint my Forgeworld Contemptor pattern dreadnought. This model is one of my favorite forgeworld models. To begin with it’s a very nice sculpt. It was a breeze to assemble and there is actually a lot of flexibility in the posing of this model. The other nice thing is that it’s really simple to add a small magnet in the shoulder to make the weapons removable. Though why swap weapons when you could just buy four of these beautiful models? Oh yeah, they’re expensive. That’s why. So much for that dream.
As for the painting I’ve had to divert from my normal method of painting my space sharks as the two main colors I used no longer exist. My base grey for them used to consist of an adeptus battle grey mix lightened up with fortress grey. I’ve found the new dawn stone, though a little lighter is just as nice. I used to use charadon granite for the shoulder pads. I’ve now had to switch to Vallejo’s surface primer grey mixed with a tad of stormvermin fur. Again, not perfect but it will work for future models.
So I airbrushed on the dawnstone and lightened up the raised areas by adding a little vallejo white. Once this was done I filled in the shoulders and knee pad with the darker grey mix. Using this same mix with a small amount of hull red I used a sponge to add some paint chipping to the dread. I repeated this process with a lightened mixture of this paint, and with a lightened dawn stone to give more to the impression of chipping and wearing. Once this was done I went in with my old fortress grey and line highlighted the most important areas. So you know, everywhere. The bronze bits were done with tin bits highlighted with hashut copper. I hit the recesses with gryphon sepia.
To get the red brick on the base I left them grey and dry brushed them along with the rest of the base with fortress grey. I then used bloodletter glaze to get the red color. Then I hit different bricks with either Devlan mud (thankfully I still have a ton of this) and Gryphon sepia to give them slightly different tones.
This was a fun paint and I’m kinda glad I put it off till now. It’s been a stressful week around here, and this was a nice relaxing paint job for me.
Enjoy!
